How to perform the red dye test?

Before starting the test, make sure you have primed your Black Berkey filters!

Step 1:

Confirm the correct positioning of the black washer and wing nut of the Black Berkey filter in the upper chamber. The washer must be inside the upper chamber and the wing nut must be under the upper chamber.

Step 2:

Remove the upper chamber of your Berkey water filter system and pour out all the water it contains.

Step 3 (Optional):

REMOVE THE FLUORIDE FILTERS and place them in a safe location.

Step 4:

Empty the lower container and set it aside in a safe place.

Step 5:

Place an equal-sized transparent glass under each black filter stem to collect the filtered water.

Step 6:

Place the upper chamber on the transparent glasses, making sure the water coming out of each filter drips into its own glass.

Step 7:

In a separate container, add one teaspoon of red food colouring for each litre of water your upper chamber holds and mix.

Step 8:

Pour the red-tinted water into your upper chamber. Your black filters must be completely submerged. NEVER POUR DYE DIRECTLY ONTO YOUR FILTERS.

Step 9:

Allow the full batch of water to filter from the upper container into the glasses below.

Step 10:

Examine the water in each transparent glass. If the filtered water has a pink or red tint, this indicates that the filter is not working correctly and has failed the test.

Step 11:

Note which filter(s) passed and failed the red food dye test and review the troubleshooting tips below to ensure the test was not a false positive, and repeat the test if necessary.

Step 12:

If your filter fails the test after following all the troubleshooting tips, please contact us for further instructions.

Step 13:

If the water in all the glasses is clear, your filters are working correctly. Empty the upper container of red water and clean it before resuming normal filtering.
